Shomyo-ji(称名寺)
A Pure Land Garden Temple in Yokohama
Shōmyō-ji(称名寺) is a peaceful Buddhist temple located in Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Founded during the Kamakura period (1185–1333), it originally served as the family temple of the powerful Hōjō clan, who ruled Japan as regents during this era.
The temple’s full name is Kanazawayama Shōmyō-ji, and it is a special head temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. It was developed by Hōjō Sanetoki around 1259, evolving from a hall where he enshrined the Amida Trinity. Sanetoki, a scholar and political leader, later established the Kanazawa Bunko, a major center of learning.
Shōmyō-ji is especially known for its Pure Land Paradise garden, a traditional style in Buddhist temple design. At the center of the garden lies a large pond, symbolizing the ocean that separates the world of the living from the Pure Land, or Buddhist paradise. A bright red arched bridge spans this pond, visually and symbolically connecting the human world to the realm of Buddha. Walking across this bridge offers both a scenic and spiritual experience.
While Shōmyō-ji is beautiful year-round, it is especially popular during cherry blossom season, when visitors come to enjoy the blooming sakura trees reflected in the garden pond. In autumn, the grounds are filled with colorful foliage, creating another layer of serene beauty.
The temple grounds also include several historic structures, a main gate, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it feel far removed from the busy city. The temple is often less crowded than more famous spots, making it a great location for a quiet visit.
Shōmyō-ji is easily accessible from central Yokohama by public transport. Admission is free, and the site includes walking paths, rest areas, and seasonal flower views. It’s a hidden gem for those interested in Japanese history, Buddhist culture, and garden design.
