Spiritual Center of the Pure Land Sect

Chion-in(知恩院) stands proudly in Kyoto as the head temple of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land Sect of Buddhism). Founded in 1234 by Genchi, a devoted disciple of Hōnen (1133–1212), this temple is deeply rooted in Japanese spiritual history. It continues to attract pilgrims, tourists, and scholars from around the world.

Right at the entrance, visitors encounter the awe-inspiring Sanmon gate, built in 1619. This impressive wooden structure is the largest of its kind in Japan and has remained unchanged for over 400 years. Its massive scale immediately conveys the importance of the temple within Japanese Buddhism.

As you pass through the gate, the path leads you into a peaceful world of towering halls, quiet gardens, and sacred spaces. The Miei-dō (Founder’s Hall) honors Hōnen and serves as a space for prayer and meditation. Meanwhile, the temple’s cemetery, stone steps, and traditional buildings offer moments of reflection and beauty in every season.

In spring, cherry blossoms create a dreamy pink atmosphere. During summer, lush greenery surrounds the halls. Autumn brings vibrant red and gold foliage, while winter offers snow-draped tranquility. No matter when you visit, Chion-in’s scenery enhances its spiritual energy.

This site isn’t just for believers. Architecture lovers, photographers, and cultural travelers all find something meaningful here.
