A Masterpiece of Momoyama Garden Design in Kyoto

Located within the historic Daigō-ji temple complex in Kyoto, Sanbō-in (三宝院) is a treasured sub-temple of the Shingon school of Buddhism. Known for its grand landscape garden and seasonal beauty, Sanbō-in offers visitors a serene experience steeped in history and artistry.

Sanbō-in was first built in 1115 during the Heian period. However, the temple and its garden gained new life in 1598, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi—one of Japan’s great unifiers—ordered the garden’s reconstruction as part of his famous Daigo Flower Viewing event. This celebration of spring cemented the garden’s reputation as a symbol of elegance and cultural sophistication during the Azuchi-Momoyama period.

The garden at Sanbō-in is a magnificent pond-strolling garden (chisen kaiyu-shiki teien). Visitors can walk along paths that circle a central pond, taking in strategically placed stones, plum and cherry trees, and carefully composed views that shift with each step.

Pond-strolling gardens often include symbolic stones, waterfalls, bridges, and flowering trees. They are designed to reflect both the beauty of nature and deeper spiritual meanings. At Sanbō-in, these elements come together to create a living painting that evolves with the seasons.

Designed to be admired from multiple angles, the garden expresses the Shingon Buddhist concept of harmony between nature and the cosmos. Whether you visit during spring for cherry blossoms or autumn for fiery leaves, the landscape never fails to inspire awe.

Spring (late March to early April) is ideal for cherry blossoms. Autumn also brings vivid colors. The garden paths are generally flat, making the site reasonably accessible, though some gravel and stone steps remain.
