Fushin-an(不審庵)
The Heart of the Omotesenke Tea School in Kyoto
Fushin-an (不審庵) is the historical tea house at the center of the Omotesenke school, one of the three main schools of the Japanese Way of Tea. It traces its roots directly back to Sen no Rikyū, the most influential tea master in Japanese history and founder of the wabi-cha tradition.
After Rikyū’s death, his son-in-law Sen Shōan reestablished the Kyoto Sen household, and the traditions of the Omotesenke school have been passed down here ever since. The name Omotesenke, meaning “Front Sen House,” refers to this main estate, where the representative tea room Fushin-an continues to embody the values of simplicity, harmony, and refined hospitality.
Fushin-an remains a vital place for preserving the cultural, spiritual, and aesthetic traditions of Japanese tea.
