A Serene Pure Land Temple with a Historic Pond Garden

Jōruri-ji(浄瑠璃寺) is a peaceful Buddhist temple located in the countryside near Kyoto. Jōruri-ji belongs to the Jōdo school of Pure Land Buddhism and offers one of the few remaining examples of temple gardens built in this tradition.

Founded in 1047 by the priest Eshin, Jōruri-ji has a long and sacred history. The temple’s layout follows Pure Land ideals, using landscape to express Buddhist teachings. In the year 1150, a large pond was added in front of the main hall. This feature holds deep symbolic meaning in Pure Land Buddhism.

The pond represents the ocean between life and death, while the island in the center symbolizes the world we live in. The temple hall on one side represents the Pure Land, the goal of rebirth in Jōdo Buddhism. Visitors cross over a stone bridge, a subtle symbol of spiritual transition.

The temple is quiet and surrounded by forest. Few tourists visit, making it an excellent spot for calm reflection. The wooden Amida Buddha statue inside the hall is a national treasure, flanked by nine smaller images representing the stages of enlightenment.

Jōruri-ji provides both spiritual and natural beauty. It’s a unique experience where Buddhist thought and garden design come together in perfect harmony.
