Kozan-ji (Iko-an)(高山寺, 遺香庵)
A Historic Temple in Kyoto’s Takao Mountains
Kōzan-ji (高山寺) is one of the oldest temples in the Kyoto area. Nestled in the quiet foothills of Mount Takao, northwest of the city, it belongs to the Shingon school of esoteric Buddhism. Tradition says it was founded in 744 by order of Emperor Kōnin, though the existence of the original temple remains unproven.
The temple gained new life in 1206 when the monk Myōe revived it as a center for Buddhist training and meditation. Myōe’s passion for both Shingon teachings and the natural world helped shape Kōzan-ji’s peaceful, reflective atmosphere.
Surrounded by tall cedar trees, forest paths, and flowing streams, Kōzan-ji feels far removed from Kyoto’s usual tourist crowds. Its remote setting offers quietude and a strong connection to nature. Visitors may even spot wild deer or monkeys nearby.
The temple shines most in autumn. Brilliant red and gold leaves blanket the grounds and hillsides, creating a breathtaking view. The cool, fresh air adds to the serene experience. In spring, cherry blossoms soften the trails; in summer, shaded paths and the sound of water bring relief from the heat. Even in winter, the temple holds quiet charm as snow touches the rooftops.
In 1994, UNESCO added Kōzan-ji to the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, recognizing its deep cultural and spiritual importance.
Despite its historical weight, Kōzan-ji remains intimate and unspoiled. It’s an ideal destination for those seeking history, spirituality, and natural beauty—all in one tranquil place.
