Nijo Castle – Ninomaru(二条城 二の丸庭園)
A Shogun’s Strolling Retreat in Kyoto
Ninomaru Garden is one of the highlights of Nijō Castle (二条城) in Kyoto. The garden was created during the early Edo period (1603–1868). It was designed by the famous garden master Kobori Enshū. Hence, his work is known for elegant simplicity and a deep sense of harmony.
The Ninomaru Palace, next to the garden, was built for Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo era. The palace served as a Kyoto residence for the Tokugawa family. The garden functions as a space for political meetings. Unlike many temples in Kyoto, this site reflects samurai and court culture. The palace has wooden walkways, painted screens, and “nightingale floors” that squeak when stepped on to alert guards of intruders.
The garden itself features a large pond with three stone islands carefully placed inside. These islands represent Horai-san, a crane, and a turtle—symbols from Taoist mythology. They stand for peace, happiness, and long life. Around the pond, carefully arranged rocks, pine trees, and trimmed shrubs add to the natural beauty. The design encourages slow strolling and quiet reflection.
Throughout the seasons, the garden offers changing scenery. For example, in spring, cherry and plum trees bloom, creating a breathtaking view. Therefore, many visitors come to enjoy hanami (flower viewing) during this time. Summer brings rich greenery and a feeling of coolness near the pond. Autumn turns the garden into a canvas of red and gold. Even winter, with its bare branches and clear light, has a special charm.
Overall, Ninomaru Garden offers a calm and historic setting. It’s a perfect place to relax, enjoy Kyoto’s seasonal beauty, and explore the refined aesthetics of the Edo period.
