A Serene Zen Garden Revival at Tōfuku-ji

Reiun-in, a tranquil sub-temple of Kyoto’s Tōfuku-ji complex, embodies the quiet beauty and meditative spirit of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Founded in 1526 during the Muromachi period, it offers a unique journey through time, architecture, and landscape design.

The gardens, originally created in 1543, had once fallen into neglect. However, in the 20th century, renowned landscape architect Shigemori Mirei revitalized them, infusing his signature aesthetic into the temple’s serene setting. Today, Reiun-in is admired for its harmonious blend of historic Zen simplicity and modern innovation.

The southern garden, located in front of the Shoin (study), is known as “Nine Mountains and Eight Seas.” This garden captures cosmic balance through a striking arrangement of sand, rocks, and shrubbery. Shigemori used bold shapes and deliberate lines to reflect spiritual depth and universal order. The space feels abstract, but intentional—each element placed with purpose.

Across the building, another smaller garden displays Shigemori’s unmistakable style—curving lines, sand in multiple hues, and symbolic abstraction. Though compact, this garden speaks volumes. It invites you to pause, observe, and reflect. You may even find new meaning each time you look at it from a different angle.

What makes Reiun-in especially appealing is its quiet atmosphere. Although it is part of the popular Tōfuku-ji temple complex, it receives fewer visitors, allowing for a more intimate and contemplative experience. You can hear the wind move through the trees and the sound of your own footsteps on the gravel. It’s a perfect spot to slow down and reconnect with the present.

Unlike busier temples, Reiun-in doesn’t overwhelm. Instead, it gently welcomes you into a world of balance, calm, and timeless Zen artistry.
