Rokuo-in (鹿王院庭園)
A Hidden Maple-Colored Gem in Arashiyama
Tucked near the quiet base of the Arashiyama hills in western Kyoto, Rokuō-in offers a peaceful break from the city’s busy tourist spots. Founded in 1380 during the Muromachi period, this Rinzai Zen temple invites visitors to slow down and take in its natural beauty. Unlike larger temples, Rokuō-in feels personal and calm.
The small Zen garden captures attention right away. At the center, a traditional tsukubai (stone basin) rests among well-trimmed shrubs. Delicate maple trees line the garden, casting dappled shadows on the ground. Each element seems simple at first. Yet, as you look closer, you’ll notice the careful balance and quiet elegance typical of Zen design. Every stone, shrub, and curve encourages stillness and focus.
In autumn, Rokuō-in truly shines. The maple leaves turn deep red and bright gold, creating a vivid contrast against the garden’s greens and greys. The scene feels almost like a painting. Even when fall colors attract more visitors, the temple rarely feels crowded. It stays quiet—perfect for reflection or a slow walk among the leaves.
A small wooden hall sits behind the garden. Its dark wood and open structure blend with the scenery. Here, you can sit and watch the wind move through the trees. Compared to busier temples nearby, Rokuō-in feels like a secret place. You may hear birdsong instead of crowds. You may find a moment to simply breathe.
Although it’s just a short distance from Arashiyama’s popular spots, Rokuō-in offers something different. It brings peace. It invites reflection. Most of all, it reminds you to enjoy the quiet beauty that still exists in Kyoto’s changing seasons.
