Sanzen-in(三千院)
Laughing Buddhas and Autumn Beauty in Ohara’s Moss Garden
Located in the tranquil village of Ohara, just north of Kyoto, Sanzen-in offers a serene and spiritual escape into nature and history. Founded in 806 by the monk Saichō, who introduced the Tendai school of Buddhism to Japan, Sanzen-in stands as one of the most culturally rich temples in the region.
The highlight of Sanzen-in is its moss-covered garden, a lush green sanctuary that can be admired from the temple’s Shinden (main hall). Throughout the garden, you’ll find charming Warai Jizō (笑い地蔵)—small stone statues with smiling faces nestled playfully in the moss. These “Laughing Buddhas” bring a sense of warmth and whimsy to the otherwise meditative surroundings.
While Sanzen-in is beautiful year-round, autumn is undoubtedly the best season to visit. The colorful kōyō (autumn leaves) start to turn slightly earlier in Ohara than in central Kyoto, bathing the garden in deep reds and golds. The contrast between the fiery leaves and the soft, velvety moss is nothing short of breathtaking.
Visitors can also explore the peaceful temple halls and enjoy local sweets and tea at nearby shops. Whether you’re here to take photos, reflect, or simply enjoy the fresh mountain air, Sanzen-in provides a peaceful and rejuvenating experience.
