A Hidden Oasis near Kyoto Station

Tucked just a few minutes’ walk from Kyoto Station, Shōsei-en Garden offers a peaceful escape from the city’s constant movement. This historical garden belongs to Higashi-Hongan-ji, one of Kyoto’s most important temples of the True Pure Land School of Buddhism.

Shōsei-en traces its origins to the early Heian period (794–1185). It is said to have once belonged to the residence of a son of Emperor Saga. Although the exact design has changed over time, the current garden layout was completed in 1641 after the Tokugawa shogunate donated the land to Higashi-Hongan-ji. The famous garden designer Kobori Enshu and scholar Ichikawa Jozan likely directed its creation.

Today, the garden remains a tranquil landscape. A large central pond reflects seasonal beauty throughout the year. Tea houses, arched bridges, and cherry trees complete the scene, especially in spring when the blossoms attract many visitors. Despite being surrounded by the city, the garden still preserves its calm and historical charm.

Shōsei-en doesn’t pretend to block out the city entirely—you may still hear traffic or glimpse nearby buildings. Yet, these reminders of modern life don’t spoil the experience. Instead, they highlight the garden’s resilience and enduring beauty. The carefully maintained paths and reflective pond invite you to slow down and enjoy the moment. With every step, you feel the harmony of nature and history.
