A Hidden Temple with Ashikaga Legacy

Tōji-in is a peaceful Zen temple tucked away in northern Kyoto. Unlike the city’s more famous sites, it remains largely untouched by tourist crowds. The temple was founded in 1341 by Ashikaga Takauji, the first shogun of the Muromachi period. He commissioned the renowned garden designer and Zen priest Musō Soseki to plan the temple and its gardens.

Tōji-in became the family temple of the Ashikaga shoguns. Inside the Reikō-den, visitors find 15 wooden statues representing each Ashikaga shogun, along with one of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The craftsmanship is striking—each face is unique, with eyes that seem to follow you.

The garden is a classic example of a strolling garden. It features a pond, a walking path, and a tea house perched on an artificial hill. Before modern buildings rose nearby, the northern mountains framed the garden beautifully. Today, the garden still offers serenity, with its winding paths, dense trees, and secluded corners that invite quiet reflection.

The eastern section of the garden is especially immersive. As you follow the curved paths around the pond, it’s easy to lose your sense of direction. Eventually, the path leads back to the main hall, creating a meditative circular journey.

Tōji-in’s calm atmosphere makes it a great place to take a break from the crowds. Visitors can enjoy a cup of matcha green tea on the veranda, looking out over the peaceful garden. The temple welcomes those seeking not only beauty but also a moment of stillness.

If you’re visiting Kyoto and looking for a place that combines history, art, and quiet elegance, Tōji-in is a must-see. It’s one of Kyoto’s best-kept secrets.

Spring is also lovely, especially when the surrounding trees bloom. However, Tōji-in is a hidden gem year-round due to its tranquility and few visitors.
