Adachi Museum of Art (足立美術館)
Where Japanese Gardens and Art Meet
Adachi Museum of Art in Shimane Prefecture was founded in 1980 by Adachi Zenko, a local textile wholesaler with a deep passion for Japanese paintings and gardens. At the age of 71, he established the museum to share his art collection and his love for gardens with the public. His decision to build the museum in his hometown reflects his sense of respect and gratitude for his roots.
A Masterful Collection of Japanese Gardens
Surrounding the museum are several meticulously maintained gardens, each reflecting traditional Japanese design principles. The highlight is the Dry Landscape Garden, but visitors will also find the Moss Garden, Tea Garden, Pond Garden—the oldest on the grounds—and the striking White Gravel and Pine Garden, which pays tribute to the works of painter Yokoyama Taikan.
This garden is also featured in our in-depth eBook, published with the support of the Adachi Museum of Art.
The contrast between the black pines and white gravel creates a living canvas of light and shadow.
From different angles, the composition of the garden appears to shift like a painted scroll unrolling.
