Kiyosumi Garden eBook – Discover Tokyo’s Stone Garden
We are excited to present our new Kiyosumi Garden eBook, the very first title in our new series The Secret Gardens of Tokyo!
Kiyosumi – A Garden of Stones
Unlike most gardens in our Famous Gardens of Tokyo series, Kiyosumi Garden does not date back to the Edo period. Its main design belongs to the Meiji era (1868–1912). While the site had older roots, it was Iwasaki Yataro, founder of Mitsubishi, who purchased and rebuilt the garden to reflect the style of a newly modern Japan.

A Showcase of Stones
Kiyosumi became the place where Yataro, his brother, and his son displayed stones they had collected from across Japan. This extraordinary collection makes Kiyosumi the finest stone garden in Tokyo. You will see not only individual keiseki (scenic stones) but also impressive stone arrangements along the pond shore and an elaborate dry waterfall.

Features of Kiyosumi Garden
Our eBook also highlights the reconstructed funeral hall of Emperor Taisho, a teahouse in sukiya style, a cherry tree grove, a small cove, and even a symbolic Mount Fuji. Each element contributes to the garden’s unique charm and layered history.
Learn History and Design Through Kiyosumi
As with all our eBooks, this guide explains the cultural and historical background of the garden. You will discover the significance of selected stone arrangements and the main design elements that define Kiyosumi’s character.
