New eBook: The Shōmyō-ji Garden Guide
When I first visited the grounds of Shōmyō-ji, I didn’t quite know what to expect. I had read about its Pure Land garden. It is one of the rare historic jōdo-style gardens in the Kantō region. However, nothing prepared me for how it actually feels to step through the temple’s red gate.
First, I walked along the quiet cobblestone road toward the majestic Niōmon gate. Then I stepped through it. Suddenly, the pond opened up before me. The water glimmered. The vermilion bridge stretched across it like a quiet invitation to pause and breathe.
That moment stayed with me. Because of that moment, I created the Shōmyō-ji Garden Guide.

Why Shōmyō-ji Is So Special
Shōmyō-ji is not just any garden. Instead, it carries more than 750 years of history.
It was founded by Hojo Sanetoki in the Kamakura period. Moreover, it served as the family temple of the powerful Hojo clan. Therefore, the site is deeply connected to medieval Japan.
At the same time, the garden has a clear religious meaning. Its central pond, island, and elegant bridges represent the Pure Land, the Buddhist paradise. In other words, this is not simply landscape design. Rather, it is spiritual symbolism made visible.
As a result, it remains one of the few places in Japan where you can truly experience what a Pure Land garden is like.
What the Shōmyō-ji Garden Guide Includes
In this eBook, I am introducing this very special temple and garden. Specifically, you will find the history of the temple and its place in medieval Japan, the meaning behind the garden’s design and symbolism, and an introduction to all the different temple buildings.
Whether you’re planning a visit, dreaming yourself into the garden, or returning in memory, this guide walks you through the temple with insights and photographs. As a result, they highlight both its artistry and its spirit.

Whether you are planning a visit, dreaming yourself into the garden, or returning in memory, this guide supports you.
Before your trip, it helps you see more. During your visit, it helps you understand more. And afterwards, it allows you to revisit the experience with deeper insight.
I have always felt that gardens are more than spaces. Rather, they are living beings. They tell stories in stone, water, and plants.
With this eBook, I hope you will feel more attuned to the story of Shōmyō-ji. And perhaps, on your next visit, you will see the garden with new eyes.
