We are excited to present our new Rikugien Garden eBook, part of the Famous Gardens of Tokyo series. This release brings us close to the completion of the collection!

Rikugien – A Garden of Waka Poetry

When researching Tokyo’s gardens, one quickly sees that no two are alike, even though most were created in the Edo period. Later reconstructions and redesigns gave each garden its own distinctive character.

Rikugien, however, stands out as a garden dedicated to Waka poetry. While the Iwasaki family made changes during their ownership, many of the original Edo-period features remain.

The garden also has strong ties to Wakayama Prefecture, especially the landscapes around Wakaura Bay. Several of its features were inspired by this region.

 Poetry in Stones and Landscapes

Our eBook explains how 88 stone posts once marked Waka poems throughout the garden. Today, 32 of them survive—can you find them all during your visit?

You will also learn about the different tea houses within Rikugien and how the bridges symbolically connect to poetry. Stone settings from the Edo period remain in place, while later Iwasaki additions gave the garden its unique blend of tradition and personal style.

Learn History and Culture Through Rikugien

Like all our eBooks, this guide goes beyond garden design. It introduces the history and cultural background that shaped Rikugien, helping visitors appreciate its deeper meaning.
