A Zen Temple Framed by Nature’s Beauty

Entsū-ji is a serene Zen Buddhist temple in northern Kyoto, known for its famous borrowed scenery (shakkei) featuring Mount Hiei. Located away from the busy city center, Entsū-ji offers a peaceful escape for those who seek quiet reflection and stunning views. This hidden gem is one of Kyoto’s lesser-known treasures, yet it leaves a deep impression on every visitor.

The temple was once a villa built by the retired Emperor Go-Mizunoo in the early Edo period. After abdicating in 1629, he spent 13 years searching for the perfect site with a clear view of Mount Hiei, which is the location he chose became Entsū-ji. Its garden, framed by a wooden veranda, is designed so that the distant mountains become part of the composition. This garden design technique, called shakkei, is beautifully executed here.

After the emperor’s death, the villa was converted into a Zen temple. Today, Entsū-ji continues to serve as a place of quiet meditation and appreciation of nature. In addition, the minimalist layout, gravel paths, and carefully arranged plants create a space that inspires stillness and mindfulness.

Unlike the crowded gardens of central Kyoto, the temple remains calm and uncrowded. You can sit on the veranda, enjoy the view, and feel a deep sense of harmony. Furthermore, the changing seasons enhance the garden’s beauty—from the greens of summer to the vibrant colors of autumn.

This garden is perfect for anyone looking to experience traditional Japanese aesthetics, Zen simplicity, and Kyoto’s natural beauty all in one place.
