A Hidden Gem of Zen Simplicity in Kyoto

Tucked away within the famous Daitoku-ji temple complex in Kyoto, Ryogen-in (龍源院) is one of its twenty-two sub-temples. Despite its modest size, it boasts several fascinating “firsts” and “oldests,” making it a must-see for fans of Zen gardens, architecture, and Japanese history.

Founded in 1502 by the Zen priest Tokei, Ryōgen-in is part of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. It may be small in scale, but it has an outsized historical presence. Its Hōjō (meditation hall) is believed to be Japan’s oldest, possibly sharing that honor with Ryogin-an of Tōfuku-ji.

Inside the temple, visitors can also view Japan’s oldest firearm, offering a rare glimpse into early Japanese warfare technology.

Ryōgen-in is especially famous for its gardens. The tiny Tōkekiko garden is often called Japan’s smallest garden. Yet its composition—simple stones and moss—encapsulates the essence of Zen.

Another gem, Ryūgin-tei, is believed to be the oldest garden in the entire Daitoku-ji complex. It offers a calm, timeless landscape that invites reflection and stillness.

While Ryogen-in is beautiful year-round, the late spring and early autumn months provide especially pleasant weather. The garden stones and moss seem to glow after a light rain, making overcast days surprisingly ideal for a visit.

Ryogen-in is located inside Daitoku-ji, which is accessible by bus from Kyoto Station. However, accessibility is limited: the temple grounds feature gravel paths and steps, and wheelchair access may be restricted. It is recommended to check in advance or visit with assistance.

Expect to spend around 30–60 minutes at Ryōgen-in. Because it’s lesser-known, it usually remains quiet and uncrowded, perfect for reflection. While exploring Daitoku-ji, Ryōgen-in offers a serene break from Kyoto’s more tourist-heavy destinations.
